WELCOME TO THE ST. MARYS SUBMARINE MUSEUM WEB PAGE

Since its inception in the late 1800s, the submarine force has had a profound effect on America's war effort. The Confederate Navy sunk the USS Housatonic off of Charleston, SC during the Civil War. The Confederate Submarine was raised recently and is now being restored in Charleston, SC. During WWII American submarines sank over 50% the of enemy ships, despite the fact that they were manned by less than 2% of our sailors. They paid the price for our freedom today. And today's sub fleet is widely considered the most cost effective leg of our strategic defense system. 4,100+ American submariners, and some riders, have paid the supreme price for our freedom today.

Located in historic downtown St Marys, GA, the museum is a great place to learn about the "Silent Service". A wide variety of Submarine artifacts, memorabilia and information are available for viewing, and you can checkout the beautiful St Marys waterfront thru a real periscope. We are a non-profit organization.

LOCATION

Located on the St Marys River in Historic Downtown St Marys, Ga. St. Marys is one of the oldest cities in the country. From GA I-95 Exit 3, take HWY 40 East (turn left at the I-95 off ramp light), go about 10 miles to the end of HWY 40, Osborne Road, at the St. Marys River. Turn right and park the car. We are the second building on the right, next to the Riverview Hotel (912-882-3242). We are the only building in St. Marys, let alone the whole State of Georgia, to have a Type 8 submarine periscope sticking out the roof & a 16' long "St. Marys Submarine Museum" sign above the front door. Unfortunately after 10 years the periscope optics doesn't focus anymore. You can follow the signs, from I-95, to the Cumberland Island National Seashore (912-882-4335) boat dock, since it is across the street from us. (Reservations required to visit Cumberland Island). We are NOT located on the Submarine Base. If in the New London, Ct., area please visit the Official U.S. Navy Submarine Museum. In addition to a wonderful museum, they maintain the largest submarine library & display the 1st nuclear submarine USS Nautilus. If in the Washington D.C., area visit the Official U.S. Navy Museum with a wonderful display of submarine artifacts. As we don't have a submarine on display the closest decommissioned submarines open for general public tours may be found in Mobile, AL & Charleston, SC. Don't forget to visit the USS GEORGE BANCROFT SSBN-643 Sail Exhibit in front of the Kings Bay Subase. Construction was funded by our fund raising campaign. It is the only full scale surfacing submarine on display in the country. The sail is from the boat when decommissioned, and the hull is made from cement with black dye.
