Subvet Steven R. Bird, a native of Houston, Texas, joined the Navy in September 1976. He reported for basic training at San Diego, Ca., with subsequent training at Basic Submarine School, Groton, Ct. in February 1977. Following Submarine School he went Underwater Fire Control "A" & "C" schools in Groton, Ct.. He then transferred to the USS Tunny (SSN 682) in September 1978. In September 1979 he was awarded his Enlisted Submarine Dolphins. He transferred to Submarine School Groton, Ct, in January 1981 as an Antisubmarine Tactics Instructor. His next duty station was Trident Training Facility Bangor, Wa. As a student in MK 118 FCS "C" school in December 1984. Upon completion of training, in June 1985, he transferred to new construction on USS Nevada (SSBN 732). He served as the Fire Control Divisional LPO for both combined new construction crews. After commissioning he served a LPO for the "Blue" crew Fire Control Division. He completed all "Shakedown Cruises" and was transferred to Trident Training Facility, in April 1988, as an Antisubmarine Tactics Instructor. In April 1989, he was transferred to Trident Training Facility Kings Bay, Ga, as an Antisubmarine Tactics Instructor. He then transferred to USS West Virginia (SSBN 736)(G) in April 1992. While there he served as Fire Control Division LPO, Ships Assistant 3-M Coordinator, Weapons Department 3-M Coordinator. He was the first First Class qualified as Diving Officer of the Watch, Chief of the Watch, and Duty Chief Petty Officer. He also qualified as FTOW, TMOW, Radio Operator, Contact Coordinator, Conventional Weapons Handling Supervisor. He retired from the Navy under the TERA program on January 1, 1995.
In September 1979, Steve married the former Linda Wiech of Uncasville, Ct. They two sons, Robert Bird and David Bird, both graduates of Camden County High School, and one daughter, Kisa Bird, a graduate of Camden County High School. All three of their children still reside in Camden County.
Steve joined the Subvets, Inc. in 1998, and become a valuable asset to the Trident Chapter.
