Subvet Sanchez Goode was born on November 29, 1935, in Philadelphia, PA, while his father was attending Temple University. In 1937 his family returned home to St. Augustine, Florida. His father was an Army Officer and got stationed at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio, Texas and Sanchez graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School there in January 1953.
Sanchez joined the Navy in April 1953, attended recruit training in San Diego, California, and upon completion was assigned to U.S. Naval Schools Command at Treasure Island, CA. He then transferred in November 1953 to Electronic Technician Class "A" School in Great Lakes, IL. In September 1954 he was sent to Naval Submarine School in New London, CT. After graduation, he reported to the USS GUDGEON (SS 567) during overhaul at Mare Island, CA. In 1955 GUDGEON returned to its homeport at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii.
Sanchez was ordered to Naval Nuclear Power School, New London, CT in January 1957 and went on to the Naval Nuclear Training Unit, Idaho Falls, Idaho in June 1957. After completion, in January 1958, he was assigned to the commissioning crew of USS SARGO (SSN 583) at Mare Island Naval Shipyard in Vallejo, CA. USS SARGO was commissioned in October 1958. After several sea trials and maiden shakedown cruise in 1959, Sanchez was selected to attend U.S. Naval Officer Candidate School, Newport, Rhode Island in September 1959. After graduation in February 1960, he was assigned to USS GREENFISH (SS 351) in Pearl Harbor, HI. In November 1962 he was assigned to the Staff of Submarine Division 73 in Pearl Harbor.
In February 1964, Sanchez was sent to U.S. Naval Deep Sea Divers School, Washington, DC. Upon completion he was assigned to USS PETREL (ASR 14) as Executive Officer. In August 1966 he was ordered to shore duty at Salem, MA as the Commanding Officer, U.S. Naval Reserve Training Center and Officer in Charge, USS SEA DOG (SS 401). In May 1967, Sanchez received orders to report to the Bureau of Naval Personnel, Washington, DC as Diver Training Program Manager. In August 1968, he was assigned to USS AMBERJACK (SS 522) in Charleston, SC. In July 1970, AMBERJACK changed homeport to Key West, FL via a five week tour in Guantanamo Bay. In November 1970, Sanchez was assigned to the Naval Ordnance Test Unit, Patrick Air Force Base, FL and he retired from there as a Lieutenant Commander in May 1973.
Sanchez is married to the former Eleanor Abnot of Blackfoot, Idaho. They were married December 14, 1957 and have four children and six grandchildren.
After retiring from the Navy, Sanchez worked six years as a real estate broker salesman, four years in the motorcycle windscreen manufacturing business and ten years for St. Johns County Property Appraiser's Office. He retired permanently in March 1994.
Sanchez joined Subvets, Inc. in Vallejo, CA in 1991, became a Life Member #803 in 1993, and transferred to Kings Bay in 1994. He joined the North Florida Gator Chapter of Subvets WW II in 1996 as an Associate Member. Sanchez has held no offices in Subvets, but attended Subvets, Inc. conventions in California, New Hampshire, and Oregon.
