AUGUST "GUS" KULICK

Subvet August "Gus" Kulick was born and raised in Scranton, Pennsylvania.  Gus graduated from a trade school in Scranton, worked in Philadelphia and Baltimore for about a year, and then enlisted in the Navy in October 1942 in Baltimore, Maryland.  (When Gus enlisted he was "under age" - was supposed to be 21 to enlist without parental permission at that time!)   He then commenced an interesting and varied career by attending Machinist Mate School.

Entering the Submarine Service in March 1943, Gus served with Submarine Divisions 45 and 181 until December 1944 when he reported on board USS PARCHE (SS 384) for duty.  He made two successful war patrols on the PARCHE (SEP 44 - JAN 46).  Went on to serve on board USS SEACAT (SS 399)(AUG 47-JAN 48), USS ANGLER (SS 240)(JAN 50-AUG 51), USS TIGRONE (SS 419)(AUG 51-APR 52), USS BOSTON (CAG 2)(FEB 55-DEC 55), USS KRETCHMER (DER 329)(SEP 56-JUL 57), USS GRAYBACK (SS 574)(NOV 61-JUN 62), and USS MEDREGAL (SS 480)(AUG 62-JUL 63).  During his career, Gus changed rate from EN to ET and was awarded the Submarine Combat Pin with one star, Navy Good Conduct Medal with one silver star, American Campaign Medal, Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal with two bronze stars, World War II Victory Medal, National Defense Service Medal with one bronze star, Navy Occupation Service Medal (Europe), and Deterent Patrol Pin for a run on GRAYBACK for 82 days.  He retired from the Navy as an ETC(SS) in September 1966 at the end of his last tour at Naval Submarine School after 22 years active duty.

Gus spent the next twelve years as a Field Engineer at Westinghouse Electric Corp. in Baltimore, MD.  After that he spent six years as a Final Test Engineer at Safetran Systems in Cucamonga, CA and retired from there in 1989.

Gus married his lovely wife, Naomi Leonard, about twenty three years ago and she has provided him with "superb adult leadership" during that entire period.

Gus is presently enjoying retired life in Kingsland, Georgia and is an active member of the Kings Bay Trident Chapter of SUBVETS here in Georgia.
